What is Pediatric Dentistry?

Pediatric dendistry is concerned with the health of children’s milk teeth. A dentist dealing with this branch of dentistry is known as a pedontist.

When Should a Pedontist First Be Visited?

A baby should have their first dental check-up where whether or not the tooth’s eruption is early or late and whether or not there are dental or gum abnormalities with a pedontist as soon as their first milk tooth comes out. The pedontist can also help if tooth eruption is difficult and provide dental health information. Regular check-ups will help your child become used to your dentist and more amenable should treatment later be necessary.

When Do Milk Teeth Erupt and Later Fall Out?

Milk teeth generally emerge between the ages of 6 months to 3 years, but they may emerge earlier or later. In general, first the front and side inscisors, then the 1st molar teeth, then the canine and then the 2nd molar teeth emerge. Each baby has a total of 20 milk teeth.

Why Are Milk Teeth Important?

First of all, the milk teeth are needed to eat. There is normally a permanent tooth under each milk tooth and the health of the milk teeth affect the health of the permanent ones. The permanent teeth also act as placeholders. The front teeth are especially important for speech development and are important for a child’s appearance and psychology.

When and How Should the Milk Teeth be Cleaned?

Regular brushing should begin as soon as the first milk tooth emerges. Flouride toothpastes shouldn’t be used as babies until the age of 3 when they develop the ability not to automatically swallow. From this age until the age 6 fluroide toothpastes formulated for children can be used. Children should brush their teeth under parental supervision until they begin primary school at least. The teeth should be brushed every morning after breakfast and at night before bed.

What Is Flouride Varnishishing?

Flouride varnishes are jells containing fluoride that need to be applied by dentists. Flouride ions strengthen the teeth against decay and cavities. Flouride varnishing should be done 2-4 times a year on children at high risk of tooth decay.

What Is Fissure Sealing?

Fissure sealing is only done on the premolar and molar teeth that have pits and fissures (grooves) on their biting surfaces. This provides them with protective plastic coating, creating a seal that forms a hard shield that keeps food and bacteria from getting into the tiny grooves in the teeth and causing. Fissure sealing is usually done after fluoride varnishing, especially on those who are predisposed to dental decay and/or have deep fissures.
