Laser beams used to remove tattoos work by penetrating the skin to reach dark coloured tattoo pigments without harming the epidermis. The tattoo pigment absorbs the laser beam, converting it to sound and light waves. This converted energy in turn causes the pigment to break up into smaller parts without harming the surrounding skin. The body’s own immune system is then able to more easily absorb and remove the tattoo pigment.
Can every tattoo be removed?
Most can be removed, but not in every case. Modern tattoo removal lasers are manufactured using advanced technology and although they can remove the prime colours they are ineffective when it comes to some tones of purple, pink and yellow as well as white in general. For this reason, we recommend that those who have tattoos with colours that are hard or impossible not to remove not to have this procedure done.
How many sessions are needed to remove tattoos with lasers?
The number of sessions needed to remove tattoos depends on the type and amount of ink as well as the technique and type of laser used. The number of sessions needed average between 5 and 15.
How much time is needed between sessions?
Around 6-8 weeks in needed between sessions.
Can’t the time needed between sessions be shortened?
Scabbing that forms on the treated area disappear after 3-4 days. Though this means the surface of the skin has healed, the treated ink under the skin at this time is still being removed from the body. This is why it is necessary to wait for as much of the ink to be removed as possible and for the skin’s supportive tissue to return to normal. This takes around 6-8 weeks on average.
Why is it that after some laser tattoo removal treatments no change can be seen?
This is completely normal. The response to laser tattoo removal treatment varies according to the ink, technique used and body’s response to the laser.
Things to pay attention to post-treatment
- Regularly use ice compression on the treated area.
- Rest the treated area by raising it when possible.
- Use your doctor’s recommended cream on the treated area.
- Avoid hot water, sauna or steam baths for 2 days.
- Should scabbing occur, wait for it to heal before swimming.
- Should there be complaints such as redness, painful swelling or throbbing despite following the above rules, consult your doctor as soon as possible.
Is there any constriction in movement after having laser tattoo removal treatment?
There will be redness and swelling for 3-4 days after treatment. As mentioned above, you shouldn’t go swimming during this period. All that is needed is to clean the treatment area with a suitable cleaner and to wear a dressing for 2-3 days to protect the area. You shouldn’t sunbathe.
Is it possible to partially remove a tattoo?
Yes. The lasers and methods we use are fine and accurate enough to allow us to do so.
Is it possible to remove permanent make-up with tattoo removal lasers?
Some inks used for permanent make-up use a metallic base that, when coming into contact with a laser beam, take on a darker or even black appearance. Removal in such cases becomes even more difficult as this blackened ink cannot normally be removed with lasers but with laser peeling only and laser peeling comes with the risk of marking, and even keloid scarring. Thus, using lasers to remove permanent make-up made from from skin tone, red and mixed colours is limited.
Does laser tattoo removal leave marks?
Most people who undergo laser tattoo removal do not experience blemishing or scarring. However, it does come along with certain risks like any other medical procedure. The skin can have problems like any other organ. Patients with a medical history of issues such as keloid or hypertrophic scarring are at higher risk of having complications. It is normally possible to remove your tattoo without any complications as long as you adhere to the advice we give.

The amount of pain felt varies from person to person. Generally, anaesthetic cream can be applied for the those with a low pain threshold as well as using cold air on the treated area during the procedure to reduce the amount of pain felt.

- Protect the treatment area from the sun for 2 weeks.
- Don’t take aspirin or other anticoagulant-based pain killers the day before or of the treatment.
