Meet the Miracle of Laser Epilation

Laser epilation works using photothermolysis where special heat is used on coloured body hairs and this heat builds up in their follicles, destroying them. Laser epilation can obtain permanent results with suitable body hairs.

Laser Epilation Equipment Used in Our Centres

Diode, Alexandrite and Nd: YAG laser systems are used in our centres. These complement each other and together achieve the maximum results. These procedures are performed under the supervision of experienced dermatologists using different laser systems which are effective for every skin and body hair type.

FDA approved Diode, Alexandrite Apogee 5500 and Nd: YAG laser systems are used in our centres.

Laser epilation is performed according to medical requirements. Realistic information, not taking into account any commercial targets, must be given to patients, not verbal guarantees and promises pertaining to definite results and/or promises of a definite completion date.

What Should You Pay Attention to When Deciding Where to have Laser Epilation?

You absolutely have to choose an experience laser epilation centre as even many non-medical professionals have opened laser epilation centres entirely for commercial gain. These centres aim to maximise profits in as little time as possible and to do so utilise many non-scientific or non-ethical practices that can cause permanent harm which many unsuspecting patients have fallen victim to. The results of such practices include only thinning, not removing, body hair and in some cases increasing the amount of body hair. Finally, there has been an increasing number of cases where there have been results of permanent burns. As a result of an increase of legal cases, the Ministry of Health has decided to only approve laser epilation in large health establishments owned by doctors and as a result have revoked the licenses of many purely commercially driven centres.

Is Laser Epilation Painfree?

The pain felt whenever the laser’s heat touches the skin is akin to that of rubber hitting the skin. A cold flow of air to protect the skin is used and this lowers the level of pain. Moreover, this cools the skin, preventing any possible harm being caused by the laser heat in the upper dermis.

It is important to protect the area to undergo laser epilation from the sun both before and after the procedure. This protection is even more vital for areas exposed to sunlight, such as the face, neck, hands and arms. On the day of the procedure, the area to be treated should be cleaned. After the procedure, hot baths/showers should not be taken and activities that can cause skin irritation, such as scrubbing, too should be avoided. The type of skincare you require depends on the area to be treated. Your doctor can give you detailed information in this regard.

What Will the Skin Be Like After Laser Epilation?

There may be temporary burning sensation and redness akin to light sunburn immediately after laser epilation and these will disappear after a few hours.

Requirements for Laser Epilation

  • Body hair needs to have fully completed maturation.
  • For the body, a total of 4-6 session on average (with 1 session every 2 months) and for finer facial hairs a total of 6-12 sessions on average (1 session every month) are necessary.
  • The number of sessions required for each person varies according to their type of body hair.
  • It is not possible for hair follicles treated with the Alexandrite laser epilation system to grow hair.
  • Laser epilation treatment must be ethically performed according to medical facts. Commercially driven treatments where the time between sessions is shorter than required and where unrealistic results are verbally guaranteed must be avoided.
  • The strength of the laser dose must be effective. Many commercially driven establishments use low doses to artificially increase the number of session required.

Can laser epilation cause harm to health?

There is no harm from a medical perspective because the lasers use non-ionised energy. This is also a sign that it doesn’t affect cell mutation. Every type of laser used in for epilation only target hair follicles.

What are the side effects of laser epilation?

After treatment, the hair follicles become prominent and the skin reddens. This happens after the use of every type of laser. This redness disappears after 1-3 hours, though 24 hours is possible, though rarely encountered. The treated area has to be protected from the sun for 7-15 days. At least 3 weeks have to pass after sunbathing before the following session otherwise there is a risk of blemishing in the treated area.

How many sessions are needed for laser epilation?

Factors such as hair colour, thickness, part of the body and skin colour influence the number of sessions needed. The number of sessions pale people with thick, black hair need is lower than the number needed than darker people who have think, light hair. On average, 4-6 sessions are sufficient for dark, thick hair.

How is the time between sessions determined?

The main factor for laser epilation is the amount of hair as the laser heat is transmitted to the hair follicles via their hair stems. The hair in the treated area falls out over 15 days following the procedure and new hair growth is waited for before the next session. This period lasts normally around 6-8 weeks, but can last up to 10-12 weeks in some cases.

Can laser epilation be used for every skin colour and hair type?

Yes! Different methods and laser settings are used depending on skin colour and hair type. Successful results are obtained after skin and hair types are analysed well. In general, people have the erroneous belief that laser epilation does not require expertise. However, laser epilation is a procedure that needs to be performed under the careful supervision of a trained and experienced doctor. It is widely known that successful results can only be obtained by using a suitable pulse technique and good timing as the laser used on the skin in laser epilation works by effecting many factors found in the skin.

Can laser epilation cause cancer?

There have been no known cases of cancer linked to laser epilation.

What precautions need to be taken both before and after laser epilation?

Before laser epilation, it is necessary for those who normally remove hair by waxing, string or tweezers not to do so for at least 15 days before the first session, though these hairs may be shaved. Hair decolourants / bleach should not be used. Make up should not be worn on the areas to be treated before the operation whereas those where deodorant and/or anti-persperant are used must be cleaned.
